About
Devin Stewart teaches a course on international affairs writing at Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and a course on US foreign policy toward East Asia at New York University Center for Global Affairs. His course at NYU examines the current political realignment of Asia and was developed from years of research and interviews he conducted in East Asia. He received NYU academic training in teaching excellence and web teaching tools.
Stewart also is Senior Program Director at Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York City where he runs a global network of scholars and thought leaders. From 2010 to 2012, Stewart was Senior Program Director at Japan Society in New York where he led the organization's public programs in response to the March 11, 2011 earthquake. He is a Carnegie Council Senior Fellow and a Truman Security Fellow.
From 2006 to 2010, he was Program Director at Carnegie Council where he founded a US-China-Japan dialogue on climate change and a corporate program. He is the founding editor of Carnegie Ethics Online and Policy Innovations. From 2004 to 2010, he was affiliated with the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC where he briefed senior US defense and diplomatic officials on East Asia. From 2000 to 2003, he was a researcher at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) in Tokyo, Japan.
Stewart has lectured on international affairs at numerous universities and organizations around the world including Yale, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Wellesley, Bard, Baruch, Sophia (Japan), Temple (Japan), NYU Stern School (China), SAIS Nanjing Center (China), Renmin University (China), and Saint Petersburg State University (Russia). He also has made presentations at the European Parliament in Brussels, the United Nations Association in New York, and China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) in Beijing.
He has participated in policy and leadership training programs at the US Marine Corps Base in Quantico, the US Army Base in Fort Hamilton, the Aspen Institute in Colorado, and the World Economic Forum in New York City. He has provided consulting to Columbia University, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, International Risk, Gerson Lehrman Group, and other organizations. Stewart also has refereed articles for The China Quarterly and Ethics & International Affairs. He has published in several books, journals, and newspapers
Stewart holds an MA from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) where he studied in Washington, DC and Bologna, Italy. At SAIS, he developed an econometric trade (gravity) model he used to advise US and Japanese policymakers. His BA, cum laude, is from University of Delaware where received a scholarship to participate in America's oldest study abroad program--in Paris, France. In France, he conducted interviews on North African immigration and the political response in the country for his thesis.
